September 21: Ride the Tropical Wave Festival with Tropical Fruit Recipes!
Here at Dishfolio we love multicultural festivals; from a food point of view, they tend to bring together the very best that a range of diverse cultures have to offer, culminating in a feast to be reckoned with. The Tropical Wave Festival in Cairns, Far North Queensland, is just this kind of celebration and, food-wise, it's Cairns' tropical fruit that steals the headlines.
Cairns' climate and landscape have historically made it the perfect place for growing tropical fruits. As well as the humble mango and papaya, dragon fruit tree can be found here, and its fruits procured for use in fruit salad or tangy chutney.
Interestingly, the dragon fruit plant was considered to be so aesthetically-pleasing by the French in the late 19th century that some regarded it as an ornament. If this is anything to go by, it could be a great food to capture in artistic food photography!
