June 8: Contemplate Preservation on World Oceans Day
Combine awareness with your food choices on World Oceans Day! Considered an observance, not a holiday, World Oceans Day highlights contributions of oceans to civilization. While humans remain very dependent on oceans for food and commerce, the health of oceans suffers with human activity. The 2013 Ocean Health Index indicated problems with overfishing by illegal or destructive fishing practices. Climate change and pollution also threaten ocean health.
While this observance would seem to promote eating fish, the current high demand for fish actually encourages techniques that promote overfishing. Destructive, illegal, or unregulated fishing practices are used to meet the demand. This makes World Oceans Day a good opportunity to explore other fish-free protein sources and try vegetable proteins, which are produced much more sustainably. Start with these family dinner recipes from our Dishfolio food bloggers to explore vegetarian protein sources and decrease your personal demand for fish and other animal proteins. The oceans will thank you!
