June 5: National Gingerbread Day shows Gingerbread is not Just for Houses
Gingerbread nearly brought Hansel and Gretel to their end but don't let that stop you from baking! Gingerbread arises in many forms: Spice cakes, cookies, and the ever popular gingerbread house. It is claimed that gingerbread has its roots in the crusades but the town of Market Drayton in Shropshire claims preeminence. Calling itself the home of gingerbread, the first gingerbread recipes are dated back to 1793. However, it is also believed that bakers put ginger in pastries during the 1640's too.
Gingerbread cookies are usually ginger snaps and they are thin and crisp. Gingerbread used to build the houses is baked in thicker slabs. These wonderful constructions are favorite subjects of the best food photographers in the world. In Lyon, Nurnberg, and Prague, to name a few, gingerbread is an art form carved from a clay-like consistency. Ginger dough has plenty of creative potential along with good taste.
