June 4: National Cognac Day for an Appreciation of Sweet and Savory
Cognac is best known as a warm winter cocktail but it also works for summer! Cognac is made from primarily Ugni blanc wine. After distilling the wine in copper pot stills, it is moved into French oak barrels for at least two years. In the 17th century, cognac was a French product traded by the Dutch, who realized it kept better than the wine they previously exported. Calling it burnt wine, the smoky flavor of Cognac was in high demand and maintained popularity through the 19th century. It was a constant in every bar and private liquor cabinet.
With a reputation as a luxury item, cognac and other brandy products are now overlooked in mixed drinks and cooking. However, it is undergoing a renaissance as many find they enjoy the flavor-whether as a drink or in food. Check out these online food recipes from our Dishfolio food bloggers.
