June 28: Enjoy Simple Food and Quiet Reflection this Ramadan
Learn Ramadan food traditions! Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. As that system is based on lunar cycles, it sets back two weeks each year. In 2009, Ramadan ended on September 20. This year, it starts on June 28 and ends July 28. Two meals are served during Ramadan: Suhoor is served before dawn and iftar is served after sunset.
Suhoor is the largest meal that ends once the sun rises. The iftar meal is lighter and some Muslims start the meal by snacking on dates. Foods served are simple but flavorful. Dates, pistachios, and dry seasonal fruits figure prominently. Traditional Middle Eastern dishes may also be featured including fattoush (vegetables and pita bread) and tabbouleh (bulgar salad with tomatoes, parsley and garlic). Muslims live worldwide and food traditions vary by region and culture. Enjoy these online food recipes from our Dishfolio food bloggers to relate better to this period of reflection!
