June 15: Experience a Safer Gin Craze this World Gin Day
Gin was once a national obsession! Distilled from juniper berries, gin has been around since the Middle Ages. Its predecessor is jenever, a Dutch spirit popular with soldiers. In the mid-17th century, gin sold in pharmacies as a treatment for kidney and stomach ailments. William of Orange popularized it as a non-medicinal liquor after taking England's throne.
Gin became popular among the poor due to its cheap production costs using poor-quality grain. Consumption increased so rapidly that the first half of the 18th century was called the Gin Craze. However, poisoning from gin was common due to inferior products used to make gin. A series of acts passed to control quality and consumption and the Gin Craze ended in 1757. Today, gin can be enjoyed safely in a variety of mixed drinks and desserts. Try these recipes from our Dishfolio food bloggers and enjoy a Gin Craze without the danger!
