September 24: Celebrate South African Heritage Day with These Inspired Recipes!

In South Africa, Heritage Day is an opportunity to embrace and celebrate the national culture. Food is an integral element of any nation's cultural identity, so it's only natural that we foodies at Dishfolio should want to mark the occasion by indulging in some traditional South African cuisine, which could provide inspiration for quick and easy dinner recipes with a twist.

If you like moussaka, for instance, you'll be likely to find much to admire in bobotie. Many of those who've experienced South African holidays and traditions will have encountered  this delicacy, as it's widely recognized as the national dish. It combines a fruity yet spicy meat filling with a crisp baked egg topping, and is believed to have been introduced to South Africa by the Dutch East India Company.

Traditionally, bobotie is served with yellow rice, but if you're an owner of South African recipe books, you'll know that spicy lentils are an equally popular side dish!
