The cheeseburger is something of an institution in the United States. It's an American dish to the very core, and has been enjoyed on native soil since the 1920s.
Exactly who is responsible for the cheeseburger's conception, however, remains an area of controversy. Many give the honor to Lionel Sternberger, who experimentally added a slice of American cheese to a hamburger while working in his father's sandwich shop in California.
In recent times, the cheeseburger has become a fast food phenomenon.
