July 25: Classy Crème Brûlée Recipes on National Crème Brûlée Day!
It is not known exactly when this delicious dessert was invented, but the first written reference to it can be found in a 1691 cookbook called "Cuisinier Roial et Bourgeois" (Royal and Bourgeoisie Cooking) written by François Massialot, a French chef. Since then, the crème brûlée has been given lots of names; sometimes it is translated into English, "burnt cream", while it can also be called Trinity Cream or crema catalana.
Crème brûlée was introduced to Cambridge, England in the second half of the 19th century, and since then it has spread throughout the world, becoming popular in restaurants and even as a dessert at that can be enjoyed at home.
Did you know that the custard base of crème brûlée cups can be flavored with citrus, chocolate or even alcohol? Because crème brûlée is traditionally seen as an upper-class, sophisticated dessert, it has inspired some truly beautiful food photography.
