July 14: Have Some Fun With Pasta on National Macaroni Day!
Macaroni is primarily known for being an elbow-shaped pasta. But contrary to popular belief, macaroni can come in many numbers of shape including shells, twists and ribbons. The real secret behind the macaroni is that it's made without any eggs.
There's a legend that macaroni was brought to Italy by Marco Polo but academics believe that macaroni comes from the Greek word 'makaria' which is a kind of barley broth served to commemorate the dead. These days, macaroni is associated with much more uplifting meals.
In North America, you'll find that the old fashioned macaroni and cheese recipe is very popular. It has also gained popularity in Asia where countries like Hong Kong love to serve macaroni in a broth style soup with ham or a frankfurter. And of course, macaroni can also serve as great décor, with schools always assigning their students to make macaroni ornaments because of its hard shell. No wonder it's a favorite model in culinary photography!
