May 15: Relish an Essential Baking Element on Chocolate Chip Day

How many baked goods would be just plain dull without the humble chocolate chip? Semi-sweet chips were first used in 1937 by Ruth Graves Wakefield in her cookies provided at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. She ran out of baker's chocolate and found the semi-sweet substitute withstood baking better than the original counterpart. Nestle adopted the brand Toll House Cookies as a nod to the inn and the chocolate chip was born!

Today, 25% of cookies sold and consumed are chocolate chip cookies. However, chocolate chips enjoy prominence in cakes, ice cream, trail mixes, and as a dessert garnishment. The semi-sweet flavor is also very appealing to those who enjoy the sharper flavor of dark chocolate, making them a snack on their own. Create some baked goods today and celebrate another successful experiment in desserts!
