September 7: Brazilian Cuisine on Brazil Independence Day!

Here at Dishfolio, we need few excuses to try out new cuisines. Brazilian Independence Day represents the ideal opportunity to sample the very best of South American cookery, and while traditionally marked with concerts and street parades, food is an important element of this celebration.

The black bean is a fundamental building-block of the Brazilian diet, and therefore the perfect ingredient to form the basis of family dinner recipes to enjoy on Independence Day. The nation may have celebrated its independence since 1822, but the historic black bean predates this by far. Today, it's commonly found in feijoada, a hearty and uplifting bean stew that's often described as Brazil's national dish.

An interesting fact about feijoada is that it's traditionally made using all parts of the pig, including  nose and ears. Don't worry, though: you're not alone if you find this unpalatable, and most modern versions use more conventional cuts!
