National Coconut Cream Pie Day as a food holiday originated in the United States (where else?). This pie became incredibly famous in Newark where people lined up for it in the legendary Tavern Restaurant, after which the popularity of the coconut cream pie surged in the early 1900s. While the Tavern Restaurant has since passed on, the popularity of the coconut cream pie remains.

There are plenty of variations to coconut cream pies. Some prefer a purely coconut-based crust while others may opt to mix in chocolate or even cookie bits. But regardless of which crust you prefer, the coconut filling remains smooth and divine.
