June 4: Cheesy Creations for National Cheese Day
If you want to track down the history of cheese, you'll have to go back to 6000 BC -to Poland to be precise. This is where the first remnants of cheese-making practices were found.
When it comes to some of our favorite types of cheese, you'll have to set your sights to more recent history. Cheddar and parmesan first came into being in the 16th century, with Camembert following in the late 1700s.
Although this food is immensely popular in European, American, and Middle Eastern circles, it's more rarely used in Asian cuisine.
So, what are some of the trends that surround the consumption of cheese? Well, if you're looking for the amount of cheese the typical American eats per year, that figure stands at 33.5 lbs. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, this statistic is one of the highest on record. When it comes to our preferences, although we're partial to easy cream cheese appetizers, it seems that mozzarella leads the way, in part due to our infatuation with pizza.
Not only are cheese tasty, but it's a great subject for beautiful food photography, just lay them out on a cheese board and they make a beautiful picture. However, you can look to our Dishfolio food bloggers for more creative uses of cheese!
