June 17: Delicious Apples for Everyone on National Apple Strudel Day
As the name suggests, Apple Strudel is European in origin, and the recipe was first conceived in Austria. Interestingly, strudel is a type of pastry that is usually combined with a sweet or savory filling. To find the origins of this dessert, you'll have to cast your minds back to the late 1600s.
Making apple strudel isn't for the light-hearted. The pastry is quite delicate, and the authentic texture needed for a true strudel is hard to perfect. It should be rather thin, and quite stretchy. Once this has been done, it's time to stuff the pastry with sliced apples that are suitable for cooking, along with extras such as raisins or some powdered cinnamon.
If you're really in the mood to get creative, be sure to make some vanilla ice cream or custard, which will be delicious when served or drizzled over your strudel. Baking pastry can be intimidating but with online food recipes from our Dishfolio food bloggers, it'll be a snap!
