Food Blogger Interview: Jasmin Fine of 1FineCookie

Jasmine Fine-1FineCookie-Portrait

Dishfolio.com has the best collection of unique and talented food bloggers! We love interviewing them so they can share with us their amazing skills and knowledge when it comes to cooking and photography. Today, we have Jasmin Fine of 1FineCookie to answer some of our questions. Her blog  contains humorous or crazy takes on baked confections and savoury dishes. There's a shake of pop culture in there too!

Tell us about your food blogging goals: What are they? How are you accomplishing them?

It's my hobby. My obsessive, life-consuming hobby.

I started a couple of years ago and it took off. I spend a lot of time thinking about cool ways to cook and bake and write it down on a notepad. I've woken up in the middle of the night and texted myself with random ideas. Some have suggested a cookbook, which could be a possibility in the future. Who knows? Maybe I will write a memoir and visit Oprah who will tell everyone to buy my book. Then they will discover I made things up in it and have to apologize. For now, I am working on making cooking videos for the blog as a next step.

Of innovative cooking ingredients you've tried, which was the hardest to find or use?

Currently, I am trying to get my hands on fresh Figs. It is in its short season right now, and the few stores that carry it sell out. I would have better luck panning for gold.

Who is your foodie hero and how do they inspire you?

My mom. She isn't involved with the Internet, really. She was a pastry chef and taught me quite a bit.

What's your go-to literary tool and how does it make your food blog successful?

Literary tool? Um… I'm reading The Hobbit. I'll probably make a recipe inspired by that at some point. Not Sméagol, though. Anything inspired by him would probably look unappetizing.

What ethical food issues get you talking with your friends and family?

Crème Brule. I find it to be an oppressed food. We are considering starting a campaign for Crème Brule equal rights.

Are you making money with your food blog? If so, what's your secret blog monetization ingredient?

Yes. Awesome or shocking ideas monetize my blog.

Describe your all-time favorite recipe.

Whipped cream. 3 Ingredients. A plethora of uses.

What's the best food photography tip you've learned in the past year?

Back up and leave a lot of space around the subject. You can always crop later. If you are too close in, there is no fixing that.

Also, lighting, lighting, lighting.

How many cookbooks do you own and which do you reach for most often?

I only have a handful. I use them for personal cooking, but not for the blog or when designing recipes for clients. Those, I create on my own or use recipes my mother taught me as a chef.

If you had to choose a kitchen tool you couldn't live without, what would it be and why?

I would choose my stand mixer. Visit my blog and you will see the most insane display of love towards a kitchen appliance.

What's next? How will you make yours the best food blog in town?

You mean it isn't already? [Scratching head…Self-reflection. Crying.]

It's a cake, that looks like a cheeseburger. No fondant was used! See a step-by-step tutorial on how it was made.
