July 22: Bottoms Up! It's National Tequila Day!
Tequila is a spirit that originates in Mexico. It is made from the blue agave plant, which grows in and around the city of Tequila. It has been grown and harvested there for around 600 years, thanks to the area's blue volcanic soil. Although the native peoples had long produced alcohol in the area, it wasn't until the Spanish settlers arrived that Tequila was created.
Traditionally, Mexicans drank Tequila straight and alone, without lime or salt. However, since Tequila has become popular on an international scale, there are lots of ways to drink it. Many cocktails include Tequila as one of their main ingredients, including the Paloma, the Tequila Sunrise and the Matador.
Did you know that official Tequila can only be produced in five different Mexican states? Thanks to its international popularity, and its association with hot Mexican nights, Tequila and the photo-friendly tequila decanter has been the subject of some great food photography.
