July 17: Let's Have A Toast to Daiquiris on National Daiquiri Day!
The word Daiquiri doesn't refer to a specific alcohol but rather to a group of cocktails whose ingredients include rum, citrus (lemon, lime or orange), and sugar. Daiquiri originated in Cuba, close to a beach with the name Daiquiri, and for a long time only the local people and travelers or tourists enjoyed these drinks.
In 1909, the drinks finally spread to America thanks to the influence of a medical officer named Admiral Lucius W. Johnson. Since then, the daiquiri drink has become popular throughout America and the Caribbean, and has spread to other countries, including the UK.
Did you know that, for many years before the official recording of the Daiquiri, the British navy drank a very similar drink called grog? The drink has earned a reputation as a sophisticated, exotic and specialist cocktail since then, and it has been the subject of some truly beautiful food photography.
