Food Blogger Interview: Kammie Gornia of Sensual Appeal

Kammi Gornia-SensualAppeal-portraitHere at Dishfolio, we love to get to know our wonderful food bloggers and food photographers, there's always something new to learn whenever we talk to them! Today we talked to Kammie Gornia of Sensual Appeal who gamely answered our questions about her food blogging goals and her surprisingly few collection of cookbooks. Her blog is a healthy living food blog that talks about everything in life that is: Delicious, Mindful, and Happy.

Tell us about your food blogging goals: What are they? How are you accomplishing them?

I started cooking and baking a little over a year ago and it has been quite the journey. I've really fallen in love with making healthier foods - I love creating desserts that taste indulgent and sinful but are healthier, at least a little bit. I try to use as many all-natural ingredients and healthy substitutions as possible. My goal is to continue creating great recipes that are delicious and nutritious. Usually ;)

Kammi Gornia-SensualAppeal-logoWhat ethical food issues get you talking with your friends and family?

Organic and veganism are the two things I talk about more - while I am realistic about these two things - I do not consider myself vegan or organic-obsessed, I definitely do try to implement the two ideas into my life as much as possible. Organic is an obvious one - I mean, fruit actually TASTES better when it's organic. Why NOT buy organic? I definitely don't want to put nasty chemicals into my body. But I am also realistic about it - some fruits and veggies are just as good commercial as they are organic so I spend money only on the ones that make the most sense.

Veganism is not something I can relate to as much - I do love my yogurt. But I do try to implement vegan recipes into my life since there have been a lot of studies done that plant-based diet is very beneficial. I think a good balance of everything is the way to go!

Kammi Gornia-SensualAppeal-foodHow many cookbooks do you own and which do you reach for most often?

I actually only own one or two. I draw all of my inspiration from other blogs! Cookbooks are awesome and all but I do have a library that I go to if I want to check out something out of a cookbook. The reason why I prefer blogs to cookbooks is that blogs contain photos for EVERY recipe whereas this is not always the case with cookbooks. I am a very visual person, being a photographer, and I just can't make a recipe without seeing it first.

If you had to choose a kitchen tool you couldn't live without, what would it be and why?

I love my food processor and blender. It's a toss-up between the two, I definitely have phases where I use one more than the other. If I'm in my smoothie or protein shake phase, I love the blender. When I am in the phase where I make banana soft serve, whipped cottage cheese, or making my own nut butters, I go for the food processor. Life would definitely be pretty darn difficult without them.

What's next? How will you make yours the best food blog in town?

I believe my food blog is different from others because of my outlook. While I started as a dieter, I am now an intuitive eater - so I post all kinds of recipes. I will post a not-so-healthy cupcake recipe but it will use some better-for-you ingredients such as turbinado instead of sugar. I also create much healthier options, such as protein donuts or pancakes or delicious mug cakes. I believe that my outlook on living a HAPPY and mindful life that is balanced is what sets me apart from others.
