Food Blogger Interview: Peter of FeedYourSoulToo
Dishfolio's food bloggers are not only great at cooking and photography, they're great interviewees as well! That's why we're always ecstatic when they can free up some time to talk to us, we jump at the chance to share their insightful thoughts to the Dishfolio community. Today, we interviewed Peter from FeedYourSoulToo. His blog is the story of a busy professional by day fueling his passion for food and cooking through sharing the experience.
Tell us about your food blogging goals: What are they? How are you accomplishing them?
My goal is continue to evolve. The original objective was sharing the experience. The goal has moved to trying to help others in the food space, whether that would be providing ideas and inspiration to others or helping others with the knowledge I have learned through this journey.
Of innovative cooking ingredients you've tried, which was the hardest to find or use?
Beyond the fact that I like to cook Mexican, Indian, Cajun/Creole and Southwestern food, the only challenge is finding stores that carry the native spices.
Who is your foodie hero and how do they inspire you?
This is a tough question. So many people are doing such cool stuff. On the famous side I love Bobby Flay and his food profile. I love to Google recipes and grab ideas from everyday chefs just like me. Social media and TV have blossomed so much in the last decade that we are all foodies. I love Diners, Drive-ins and Dives - people all around the country are making great food. I love to try and recreate what I see and visit their restaurants when I am in their cities.
What's your go-to literary tool and how does it make your food blog successful?
Spirituality - cooking is my Zen. It is my passion that brings energy to everything else I do.
What ethical food issues get you talking with your friends and family?
The two biggest issues for me are treatment of animals and sustainability.
Are you making money with your food blog? If so, what's your secret blog monetization ingredient?
I am just now starting to focus on monetizing the blog. As a male food blogger and being in the gender minority of food bloggers, the secret ingredient is offering a different voice from what exists out there.
Describe your all-time favorite recipe.
It is impossible to think of just one. I love so many and my greatest joy comes from friends' and family's enjoyment of my food. If I were forced to say just one then I would have to go with my Cajun recipes and specifically, my Chicken and Andouille sausage Gumbo.
What's the best food photography tip you've learned in the past year?
Bracketing - taking multiple pics of the same subject and raising and lowering the amount of light that comes into the camera.
How many cookbooks do you own and which do you reach for most often?
I probably own about 20. I rarely buy them today because I love to grab recipes from famous and not so famous people on the Internet. I do love my Bobby Flay, Ina Garten, Smoke and Spice, Heaven on 7 and Pioneer Woman
If you had to choose a kitchen tool you couldn't live without, what would it be and why?
My iron skillet!
What's next? How will you make yours the best food blog in town?
On top of making great food and taking awesome pictures, it is having a unique voice.
What keywords or cooking types would you like to be best known for?
Down home, comfort food.
Ancho chicken enchilada pizza
Ancho rubbed grilled chicken with enchilada sauce, 2 cheeses and 2 types of pepper all on a pizza crust - yum!
