October 18: Crack a Chestnut Open on the French Chestnut Festival!
The word "chestnut" describes both the type of beech tree that produces these nuts, and the nuts themselves. It is thought that chestnuts were first consumed in Asia, where experts believe that Chinese chestnut trees have been growing for up to 6,000 years.
Today, chestnuts are valued for their homely quality, and they are largely considered a healthy food because of the good oils and fats they contain. They are celebrated at the Chestnut Festival in Mourjou, France, where local people roast and sell chestnuts, learn about these long-consumed nuts and engage in demonstrations, storytelling and dance.
At Dishfolio, we were pleased to learn that over two tons of chestnuts are consumed at the Chestnut Festival - that's a lot of nuts! The comforting smell of home-roasted chestnuts is a nostalgic memory for many, and as a result roasted chestnuts have been the subject of lots of great food photography.
